2021 Brings Massive Changes in Cyber & Privacy

The prevalence of data breaches and cyber-attacks has risen significantly during 2020, resulting in greater exposure and vulnerability to cyber-related incidents across all organisations and industries. Global political tension as well as a sharper focus on ensuring the data privacy and security rights of consumers are protected have also contributed significantly to the spotlight well and truly being shone on the need for reform of existing legislation.
2021 is shaping up to be a watershed year for privacy and cybersecurity reform, with ongoing reviews and consultation processes well underway. Currently, the Privacy Act and the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act are under significant review, with major amendments likely to be implemented to both in the first half of next year. Legislation concerning the new Digital Identity system is also likely early next year as the Federal Government looks to introduce a framework for the verification of digital identities.
